22)And GOD remembered
Rachel, and GOD hearkened
to her; and open her womb
23)And she conceived, and
bare a son; and said, GOD
hath taken away my
reproach
24)And she called his name
Joseph; and said the LORD
shall add to me another son
GOD REMEMBERED RACHEL
AND OPEN HER WOMB
At best of time for her after
he had taught her how to
depend on GOD and the
reproach of bareness taken
away and show mercy and
kindness by opening her
womb and make her fruitful
and she became the mother
of a child so much desired
through the goodness of
GOD and gave Rachel also a
son, whom she named
Joseph, because his birth not
only furnished an actual
proof that GOD had removed
the reproach of her
childlessness, but also
excited the wish for another
son from GOD.
GENESIS 37:2
2)These are the generations
of Jacob, Joseph, being
seventeen years old, was
feeding the flock with his
brethren: and the lad was
with the sons of Bilhah, and
with the sons Zilpha, his
father’s wives : and Joseph
brought unto his father their
evil report
THESE ARE THE GENERATION
OF JACOB, JOSEPH BEING
SEVENTEEN YEARS
JOSEPH- Being seventeen
years old was a shepherd
over the flock, he is a young
boy and He was with the
sons of Bilhah and the son of
Zilpha, his father’s wives: his
concubine, these son of their
were Dan and Naphtali, the
son of Bilhah; and Gad and
Asher, the sons of Zilpha,
especially to be with the son
of Bilhah who is the
handmaid of Rachel, Joseph
Mother, and she being dead,
it might be thought that
Bilhah and her sons would
have the most respect for
Joseph, rather than with the
sons of Leah, either for
Joseph security , because the
others sons retained the old
grudge of their mother, and
were more like to envy,
contemn, hate and abuse
him.
JOSEPH BROUGHT UNTO HIS
FATHER THEIR EVIL REPORT
,And Joseph brought unto
his father their evil report:
for not being able to bear
with their evil deeds, and not
having authority enough ,
being a junior, to reprove,
correct and check them, he
reported them to his father

3)Now Israel loved Joseph
more than all his children,
because he was the son of his
old age: and he made him, a
coat of many colors
4)And when his brethren
saw that their father loved
him more than all his
brethren, they hated him and
could not speak peaceably
unto him
THE SON OF HIS OLD AGE
Joseph was born when
Jacob was ninety-one years
old, and younger than the
children of Bilhah and Zilpha,
there would then be a
considerable interval
between him and the others
sons, ; and though Rachel
had a second son some years
afterwards, yet Joseph
continue to be the son long
looked for, whose birth had
given him so great happiness:
whereas his joy at Benjamin’s
coming was bought at the
terrible price of the mothers’
death
A COAT OF MANY COLOR’S
This was a coat reaching to
the hand and feet, patches of
colored cloth, worn by
persons not much occupied
with manual labor,
considered a dress of
distinction a token of Jacob
special love
WHEN THE BRETHREN SAW
THAT THE FATHER LOVE HIM
MORE, THEY HATED HIM
Israel(Jacob) loved Joseph
more than all other sons
because he was born in his
old age, as the first-fruit of
the beloved Rachel(
Benjamin was hardly four
year old at this time, and he
made a long coat with
sleeves of many colors for
Joseph, when his brethren
saw that their father loved
him more than all his
brethren, which they
perceived by various things
In his behavior to him, by his
words, his looks, his gestures,
and particularly by the coat
he made for him , which
distinguished him from the
rest.
This partiality made Joseph
hated by his brethren, so that
they could not address him
as such a way to wish him
well, by offering the usual
salutation,” peace be with
you” but they could not
conceal their hatred, but
betrayed it by the speech
unto him, they could not
speak to him occasionally,
but in a cross, ill natured
manner.
GENESIS 37:5-10
5)And Joseph dreamed a
dream , and they hated him
yet the more
6)And he said unto them,
hear I pray you, this dream
which I have dreamed
7)For, behold we were
binding sheaves in the field,
and, lo, my sheaf arose, and
also stood upright and,
behold, your sheaves stood
round about, and made
obeisance to my sheaf
8)And his brethren said to
him shalt thou indeed reign
over us? Or shalt thou indeed
have dominion over us? And
the hated him yet the more
for his dream, and for his
words
9)And he dreamed yet
another dream, and told it
his brethren, and said,
behold, I have dreamed a
dream more; and behold, the
sun and the moon and the
eleven stars made obeisance
to me
10)And he told it to his
father and to his brethren;
and father rebuked him and
said unto him, what is this
dream that thou hast
dreamed? Shall I and thy
mother and thy brethren
indeed come to bow down
ourselves to thee to the
earth?
11)And his brethren envied
him: but his father observed
the saying
AND JOSEPH DREAMED A
DREAM
In which, though, intended
as a Divine communication,
which it is likely he did not
understand first, and
therefore, in great simplicity,
not in pride, since here is no
reason to suppose that
Joseph as yet understood the
celestial origin of his dream,
but in his simplest heart told
it to his brethren, for, had he
understood it, he certainly
would not have mentioned it
to them, for he could not but
know they were likely to
make an evil construction
and use of it.
But GOD’S special
providence was seen both in
giving these dreams, and in
causing him to reveal them,
this hatred was increased
when Joseph told them of
two dreams that he had: that
as they were binding sheaves
in the field, his sheaf “stood
and remained standing, but
their sheaves placed
themselves it and bowed
down to it; and the sun (his
father) and the Moon his
mother) and the eleven
stars( his eleven brethren)
bowed down before him, and
the first dream represents by
a figure the humble
submission of all his brothers
to him, as they rightly
interpret it, there the
sheaves are connected with
the brother who bound
them, and thereby indicate
the parties.,
The second dream
aggravated the hatred not
only because he had carried
an il report of them to his
father, and because he love
him more than they, but still
more because of this dream:
the meaning of which they at
once understood will rule
over them, of his brothers;
but the father, while
rebuking him for his
speeches, but partly lest
Joseph should be puffed up
upon the account of his
dreams, and principally to
allay the envy and hatred of
his brethren, yet he marked
the saying.
AND HIS BROTHERS ENVIED
HIM
Notwithstanding all the
precaution Jacob took to
prevent it: they suspecting
and fearing that these
dreams meant the pre
eminence of Joseph over
them, or however to fill his
mind with the hope of it, but
his father observed the
saying; what Joseph had said
in relating to the dream; he
laid up his mind and waited
to see its accomplishment
GENESIS 37:12-17
12)And his brethren went to
feed their father’s flock in
Shechem.
13)And Israel said unto
Joseph, do not thy brethren
feed the flock in Shechem?
Come, and I will send thee
unto them, and he said to
him, here am i
14)And he said to him, go I
pray thee, see whether it be
well with thy brethren, and,
well with the flocks; and
bring me word again, so he
sent him out of the vale of
Hebron, and he came to
Shechem
15)And a certain man found
him, and behold, he was
wandering in the field; and
the man asked him, saying,
what sleekest thou?
16)And he said, I seek my
brethren: tell me, I pray thee
where they feed their flocks
17) And the man said , they
are departed hence; for I
heard them say, let us go to
Dothan, and Joseph went
after his brethren, and found
them in Dothan
AND THE BRETHREN WENT
TO FEED THEIR FATHER’S
FLOCK IN SHECHEM
And Joseph brethren went
to feed their father’s flock in
Shechem, very much close to
the time after the telling of
the dreams; it was usual to
move flocks from place to
place for the sake of
pasturage; and some time
great distance, as Shechem
was where Jacob children
Simeon and Levi barbarously
massacre Hamor and
Shechem his son and all
male, and took Dinah out of
Shechem’s house.
But it is no wonder that
their father should be
anxious for their safety after
the cruel and barbarous
massacre which Jacobs’s son
had been guilty of towards
the Shechemites ,
GENESIS 34:25-28,
Joseph is sent to enquire of
their welfare, with obedient
promptness showing the
readiness to obey his father;
and go on this errand, being
a long journey, and that the
brethren also bore no good
will to him, the youth
obediently goes to Shechem,
where he learnt through a
man that he overheard them
saying that they are going to
Dothan

cometh
20)Come now therefor, and
let us slay him, and cast him
into some pit, and we will

devoured him; and we shall

21)And Reuben heard it, and
he delivered him out of their

him
22)And Rueben said unto
them, shed no blood, but
cast him into this pit that is in
the wilderness, and lay no
hand upon him; that he
might rid him out of their
hands, to deliver him to his
father again
AND WHEN THEY SAW HIM
THEY CONSPIRED AGAINST
HIM
In a short time the hatred of
Joseph brethren grew into a
crime, when they saw him
afar of, they knew his
stature, his gesture or
walking and especially by his
coat of many colors, they
formed the malicious
resolution from his brethren
to put him, this dreamer
they entered into
consultation, and devised
the most crafty methods they
think to take away his life
and conceal the murder the
master of dream, let us put
him to death, whether
threatening that his dream
might come to pass and he
will become their ruler,
Rueben dissuades them from
the act of murder, and
advises merely to cast him
into the pit, to which they
consent., he had a more
tender heart than the rest,
he choose a pit without
water
GENESIS 37:23-25
23)And it came to pass,
when Joseph was come unto
his brethren, that they
stripped Joseph out of his
coat, his coat of many colors
that was on him
24)And they took him, and
cast him into a pit; and the
pit was empty, there was no
water in it
25)And they sat down to eat
bread; and they lifted up
their eyes and looked, and,
behold, a company of
Ishmaelites came from Gilead
with their camels bearing
spicery and balm and myrrh,
going to carry it down to
Egypt
AND IT CAME TO PASS
WHEN CAME THEY STRIPPED
JOSEPH OUT OF THE COAT
They stripped Joseph out of
his coat of many colors, they
gladly took and executed the
plan, how astonished and
terrified must he have been
at the cold reception, the
cruel intentions,
They put him in an empty
pit, the same that Reuben
pointed to them, whose
counsel they gladly took and
readily executed, where
there was no water in it,
Reuben had saved Joseph’s
life indeed by his proposal;
but his intention to send him
back to his father was
frustrated ,and they sat down
to eat bread not at all
concerned at what they had
done, nor the least grieved
for the affliction of Joseph,
and without any pity and
compassion for him in his
distress.
But joyfully and glad they
got him into their hands, and
like to get rid of him forever
and they lifted their eyes,
and looked, after they have
eaten their food behold a
company of Ishmaelites came
from Gilead a place of
merchandise going to Egypt
GENESIS 37:26-28
26)And Judah said unto his
brethren, what profit is it if
we slay our brother, and
conceal his blood
27)Come, and let us sell him
to the Ishmaelites, and let
not our hand be upon him;
foe he is our brother and our
flesh, and his brethren were
content
28)Then there passed by
Midianite’s merchantmen;
and they drew and lifted up
Joseph out of the pit, and
sold Joseph to the
Ishmaelites for twenty pieces
of silver; and they brought
Joseph into Egypt
JUDAH SAID WHAT PROFIT
IS TO SLAY OUR BROTHER
It will be less guilt and more
gain to sell him, and conceal
his blood? Come let us sell
him as slave to the
Ishmaelites and that will
defeat his dream, and as
these were going down to
Egypt, where they would sell
him, he would be far enough
from them, and there would
be no probability of his ever
being lord over them ,
they all agreed to this, in as
much as they supposed it
would answer their end as,
well, which was to prevent
his domination over them,.
And Joseph was sold by the
setup of Judah for twenty
pieces of silver,
Reuben, it seems, was gone
away from his brethren when
they sold Joseph, intending
to come around round some
other way to the pit and to
help Joseph out of it, but had
this taken effect
GENESIS 37:29-32
29) And Reuben returned
unto the pit; and, behold,
Joseph was not in the pit;
and he rent his clothes
30)And he returned unto his
brethren, and said, the child
is not, and I, whither shall I
go?
31)And they took Joseph’s
coat, and killed a kid of the
goats and dipped the coat in
the blood
32)And they sent the coat of
many colors, and they
brought it to their father, and
said, this have we found;
know now whether it be thy
som’s coat; and evil beast
hath devoured him; Joseph is
with out doubt rent to
pieces.
REUBEN RETURNED TO THE
PIT AND JOSEPH IS NOT IN
Evidently he was not present
when Joseph was sold to the
Midianites the Midianites
had carried of the Joseph,
the business was settled in
Reuben’s absence: probably
because his brethren
suspected that he intended
to rescue Joseph and send
him back to the father, when
he came to the pit and found
Joseph gone, he rent his
cloth, a sign of intense grief
on the part of the natural
man and exclaimed: the boy
is no more, in the pit, and I,
whither shall I go!, how shall I
account to his father for his
disappearance, especially
whom he had highly
offended already in the case
of Bilhah the father’s
concubine he slept with
GENESIS 35:22 and now he
would be yet more enraged
against him for his neglect of
Joseph, who, he might have
expected, would have taken
particular care of him, being
the eldest son, this shows the
cold and heartless cruelty of
his brethren of their deed .
But the brothers contrive to
conceal their crime; and

Joseph is sold into Egypt ,
the brethren ,were at no
loss; after they had told
Reuben what they had done
with him, who being willing
to make the best of things as
it was, joined with them in
the following scheme; by this
it appears, that when they
took Joseph out of the pit
they did not put his coat on
him, but sold him naked, or
almost so to the merchants
and killed a kid of the goats
and they dipped Joseph’s
coat in the blood of a goat
and sent it by the hand of
messenger, whom they
instruct what to say to their
father , not caring to appear
in person, with the message,
we have found this; see
whether is it is thy son;s coat
or not.
Jacob recognized the coat at
once, and mourned bitterly
in clothes for his son, whom
he supposed to have
devoured and killed by a wild
beast, and refuse all comfort
from his children
How should his sons comfort
him, when they were obliged
to cover the wickedness with
the sin of lying and hypocrisy,
and when Reuben, although
at first beside himself at the
failure of his plan, had not
courage to disclose his
brothers’ crime?
GENESIS 37:33-36
33)And he knew it, and said
it is my son’s coat; and evil
beast hath devoured him;
The brethren of Joseph
thought of how they will
handle their father? What
were they going to tell him?

Joseph is without doubt rent
in pieces
34)And Jacob rents his
clothes, and put sackcloth
upon his loins and mourned
for his son many days
35)And all his sons daughters
rose up to comfort him; but
he refused to be comforted;
and he said, for I will go
down into the grave unto my
son mourning thus his father
wept for him
36)And the Midianites sold
him into Egypt unto Potiphar,
and officer of Pharaoh’s and
captain of the guard.
they worked out a cruel
scheme, a terrible lie to
deceive him, they dipped
Joseph’s coat in the blood
from a goat and took it to
their father, conspiracy , they
told him that it might be
Joseph’s coat, but they were
not sure if it was it?.
Their deception worked out,
Jacob immediately
Recognized that some wild
animal had torn the coat and
eaten Joseph, upon seeing
the bloodied coat, Jacob had
hid own clothes turn and put
up sackcloth, which is a sign
of mourning and he stayed in
mourning for days, all his
sons and daughters tried
their best to comfort him,
but he will have absolutely
nothing to do with any one .
Joseph was taken to Egypt
and sold as a slave to
Potiphar, who was an official
in the court of Pharaoh,
means the Captain of
Pharaoh body guard
GOD;S providence: GOD was
in control and working all
things out for good so that
his great purpose and
promises to his people could
be fulfilled God saw to it:
That the brothers
threw Joseph into the
pit and did not kill
him
That the Midianite
traders came along at
just the right time
That the brothers
sold Joseph to the
traders
That Joseph was
taken to Egypt at the
right time
That joseph was sold
to Potiphar at the
right time
Joseph’s own experiences
were very real and
harrowing, he had incurred
the murderous hatred of his
brothers, and as he
approached, them in Dothan
little did he realized the
dreadful deed they were
about to plan, though it
would be terrible and bitter
experience for him, in the
providence of GOD it work
for good

HE WAS IN THE HOUSE OF
HIS MASTER
He did not attempt to make
an escape to his father, but
humbled himself patiently
and faithfully, he more
concerned about his service
in the house in to ,which
GOD’S providence had
brought him
The LORD the GOD of
covenant , with his gracious
presence and blessing was
with Joseph, in the house as
a domestic servant, and the
master saw, the prosperity
that attended all Joseph’s
doing was so striking,
especially by his dexterity In
business, and by the
prudence and faithfulness
with which he did everything,
he could endeavor to get the
knowledge of that language
that he was highly favored by
GOD and had great talent
bestow upon, and was an
extraordinary person for his

willingly, cheerfully and he
set him over as to show that

THAT THE LORD BLESSED
THE EGYPTIAN HOUSE FOR
JOSEPH SAKE
That is much more than
before; everything under his
hands succeeded before, but
now much more abundantly;
Potiphar’s family was blessed
with health, his substance
increased, he grew rich and
wealthy, and abounded with
all good things, and the
blessing of the LORD was
upon all that he had in the
house, and in the field, his
domestic affairs prospered,
his field brought forth
plentifully, his cattle’s were
fruitful and stood well;
everything belonging to him

through the blessing of GOD
upon it and all for joseph
sake
AND HE LEFT ALL HE HAD IN
THE HAND OF JOSEPH
The master took no care of
anything, but committed all
to him, trusted him with his

and with the management of
his affairs; such confidence
did he put in Joseph’s hand,
and he knew not what he

substance is in his hand, yet
he made no use of it for
himself, enjoying nothing of
it but the bread he ate; he
was goodly character, as
